Two Factor Authentication: What Is It and Why Do You Need It?

What is Two Factor Authentication?

Most of us with a Google, social media or online banking account will be familiar with Two Factor Authentication (2FA) whether we know it or not. 2FA is simply a way to add an extra layer of security to your online accounts. So instead of only entering your password, 2FA requires you to provide a second piece of information to verify your identity. This second ‘factor’ could be a code sent to your phone or email, or an authentication app that generates a unique code.

By combining something you know (your password) with something you have (your device), 2FA makes it much harder for unauthorized people to access your accounts, even if they have your password.

What Are the Risks of Not Using 2FA?

Operating without 2FA can leave your online accounts more vulnerable to hackers. If someone gets hold of your password, they can easily access your accounts, delete or steal your information, and potentially commit fraud. Without 2FA, your account relies solely on your password for protection, and passwords can be guessed, stolen, or cracked using commonly available software. 2FA adds an extra barrier, making it much harder for hackers to break in, even if they have your password. Skipping 2FA means taking a bigger risk with your online security.

How Does 2FA Work at IntelligenceBank?

2FA is an optional add-on at IntelligenceBank that needs to be activated with your Customer Success Manager. It is typically used in conjunction with Single Sign On (SSO). For example, account holders and their employees use SSO for authentication, while external partners such as agencies, freelancers and brand partners use 2FA.

Once activated, Admin users can decide between two settings for their team members – Global and User.

If ‘Global Setting’ is selected – all users will be required to authenticate with a verification code.

If ‘User Setting’ is selected it will only apply to selected users. Additionally you can choose whether you allow end users to manage 2FA directly via their My Account area.

Once enabled, users will receive a verification code either as an email or text message in order to log in. Main Admins have the option to choose which method they will set as a rule.

Your Customer Success Manager is happy to talk about the best configuration for your team and partners as well as guide you to set it up. If you’d like to find out more about other IntelligenceBank security features please click here.
